Choosing A Car Number Plate
There are a number of ways you can personalise your vehicle by using one of the different types of car number plates.
Cherished Number Plates
With the cherished number plates you are able to use a number plate that does not show the date that your car was registered. They are also known as "dateless" number plates and tend to have the highest value.
Examples of these types of car number plates could be JAN 123 or AB 1234. A car number plate with three letters can have a number up to 999 after the three letters whilst a number plate with two letters can have a number up to 9999 after the two letters.
Reversed Cherished Plates
Car number plates such as 123 JAN and 1234 AB are considered 'reversed" cherished plates and maybe valued less than the original cherished plates.
A car number plate with three letters can have a number up to 999 before the three letters whilst a number plate with two letters can have a number up to 9999 before the two letters.
Suffix Number Plates
Suffix number plates consist of combinations with the year identifier at the end of the number plate. Examples could include JAN 1E, JAN 99T or JAN 123L. The combinations within this category always have three letters, followed by numbers between 1 to 999. The available suffix indicators are from A to Y, but exclude the letters I, O, Q, U and Z.
Prefix Number Plates
Prefix number plates are combinations with the year identifier at the beginning of the number plate. The combinations within this category always have three letters and may be preceded by the number range 21 to 999 plus the prefix indicators excluding I, O, Q, U and Z.
New Format Number Plates
New format number plates like MT51 CAT and MT05 XYZ consist of a two letter regional identifier which relates to where a vehicle was registered. It then followed by a two figure age identifier indicating when a vehicle was registered, followed by 3 random letters. The letters do not include 'I', 'Q' and 'Z' which have been omitted from the regional identifier (the first 2 letters of the registration) and the letters 'I' and 'Q' have also been omitted from the 3 random letters at the end of the registration.
